# Live Streaming

If you're starting with our live-streaming service, you'll want to visit the following guide to set up your encoder.

Other encoders can be set up in the same way as OBS. This typically requires you to copy + paste a Server URL and Stream Key into your configuration. These can be found on the **Stream Settings** page after logging into your account.


# Setting up OBS

Live streaming with Open Broadcasting Software | OBS Studio

1\. Download and install OBS Studio by visiting the [www.obsproject.com](https://obsproject.com/?ref=christianworldmedia.com) website. Once installed and launched, click on the "Settings" button, as shown below.

2\. From the left menu, click the "Stream" tab and fill in the URL and Stream Key fields. You can find your URL and Stream Key by [logging into your CWM account](https://www.christianworldmedia.com/wordstream/login.asp) and visiting the "Stream Settings" page. Look for the "FMS URL" and "STREAM" values and copy & paste them into the OBS fields.

3\. From the left menu, click the "Output" tab and choose "Advanced" from the Output Mode drop-down option. Change Rate Control to "CBR". Change the bit rate to correspond to about half of your available upload speed but no more than 2000 kbps (2 Mbps), or no higher than the limit on your CWM plan. You can determine your upload speed by visiting [www.testmy.net/upload](http://www.testmy.net/upload) and running an upload speed test. When your results are returned, multiply them by 1000. For example, if your upload speed result is 4 Mbps (4 x 1000 = 4000 kbps), configure OBS to use 2000 kbps which is half of your available upload speed. Lastly, change the Keyframe interval to 2 seconds.

4\. From the left menu, click on the "Video" tab and change the Base and Output resolutions sizes to 1280x720. If your camera outputs to a lower resolution, change these to match your camera.

Click OK to save your changes.

5\. Make sure your video capture device is plugged in and powered on. Click the "+" icon located beneath the Source box as shown below, and choose "Video Capture Device".

6\. Select your video input device from the drop-down and press OK.

7\. You should now see and hear your video and audio from your input device. You can now live stream by clicking the "Start Streaming" button.

# Optimizing your live stream

Optimizing your live stream for the best quality.

1\. Foremost, we need to determine your highest ISP upload speed to know how much video data can be transferred before running into issues such as buffering and freezing. Run the following test while using the internet from the streaming location.

Visit [www.testmy.net/upload](http://www.testmy.net/upload) and click the "Test Upload Speed" button, as shown below.

2\. After the test has been completed, you'll most likely be shown the results in "Mbps" or megabits per second. We'll need to convert this to "Kbps" or kilobits per second and then divide it in half. This will be the optimized bit rate for your video.

With the result from the speed test, proceed to multiply it by 1000 and divide by 2. For example, as seen in the image below, our upload speed was 5.1 Mbps:\

5.1 x 1000 = 5100\
5100 / 2 = 2550\
\
Our optimized bit rate to live stream is 2550 Kbps.

3\. Now that we know your optimized video bitrate, we need to match it to the best video resolution size. Use the recommendations below to determine your optimized resolution size:

* 3000-4500 Kbps: Recommended resolution size: 1080p
* 1800-3000 Kbps: Recommended resolution size: 720p
* 900-1800 Kbps: Recommended resolution size: 480p
* 600-900 Kbps: Recommended resolution size: 360p
* Up to 600 Kbps: Recommended resolution size: 240p

As per our example, we had a result of 2550 kbps, and we now have determined that our optimized resolution size would be 720p.

4\. You can now update your encoder with the optimized video bit rate and resolution size, giving you the best quality from the encoder end. It's good to note other factors can degrade quality, such as using non-digital connections or having non-HD cameras but using these settings will ensure your encoder is sending out an optimized video.

* ISP upload speeds do fluctuate from time to time. It's always a good idea to run a weekly speed test to ensure your speed hasn't changed much. This is especially important if you start experiencing issues with buffering/freezing, as this will allow you to adjust your bitrate as needed during internet issues.

# Adaptive live streaming

With server-side adaptive streaming, we can split your incoming high-quality live feed into multiple resolutions, providing a better streaming experience for those with less-than-perfect internet conditions and high quality for those with excellent internet conditions.

For example, when your encoder sends in a high-quality 720p feed, your viewers can also have 480p, 360p, 240p, and 144p available. And the best part is their players will automatically adapt to the best resolution based on their internet speed.


# Roku Channel

Getting started with a Roku channel.

A Roku channel will expand your ministry reach. It will make finding and watching your media much more accessible for those not technically inclined or those without a computer or mobile device.&#x20;

Here are some features you'll enjoy with our Roku channel service.

### A customized Roku channel.

We'll build and launch your channel using a customized SDK Roku channel fully integrated with your CWM account. If you want to manage your channel, you can use our service to host and organize your content and then use a dedicated JSON URL to host it under your Roku account. Please get in touch with us for your JSON URL if you wish to proceed this way.

### Built with your artwork.

We can get you up quickly using your ministry brand logo you provided. Your channel will blend well with your logo, using custom background colors to match!

### Easy live stream integration.

Your viewers can watch your live stream directly through your Roku channel. If you utilize a third-party service for your live streaming, send us your RTMP URL, and we can point your channel to your existing live streaming provider. You can utilize our service if you don't currently have a live-streaming provider.

### Video-on-demand integration.

Your viewers can watch previous live streams and uploaded pre-recorded content.

### Easy video categorization and management.

Organize your videos into categories to provide an easy way for your viewers to search and find your content.

### Great for Roku developers.

If you already manage your own Roku Direct Publisher channel, you can easily switch to CWM using our feed URL with a quick update to your settings from Roku's website. After setup, you can manage your channel's live and on-demand video content through the CWM dashboard.


# Get started

To get started, log in to your CWM account, visit the **Roku** page, and submit a build request by completing the information requested there.


# Adding or removing videos

Adding videos, modifying titles or descriptions, and removing videos on your Roku channel are all done through the Video Archiving pages of your CWM Account.  Your Roku channel will mirror the setup you've done there, including organizing your videos into categories.

# Organizing videos into categories

You can create multiple categories to organize your videos for your Roku channel. This is done by logging into your CWM account and visiting the Video Archiving pages. Find the category options there to begin creating and organizing your videos.&#x20;

# Customized artwork on your Roku channel

We will use your logo artwork to create images needed to develop and publish a Roku channel on your behalf.  We recommend your highest quality PNG or JPG artwork with a minimum of 1000 pixels in width or height.


# Live streaming on Roku

Live streaming on your Roku channel does not require any extra setup. Once CWM receives your live stream to our servers, it is instantly available on your Roku channel.&#x20;

# How long does it take to publish a Roku channel?

Roku channels can take between 1-3 weeks to develop and publish, and most of this delay time is due to the QA process Roku does for each submission. Once we are notified that your channel is available on the Roku channel store, you will receive an email notification.


# Manage your own channel

If you prefer to manage your own Roku channel, please continue reading. CWM will still host all your video assets and JSON feed. However, you'll manage the actual Roku account, including creating artwork.

# Facebook Live

Share your CWM live stream on Facebook.

# Setting up a Persistent Key

Setting up a Persistent Key in Facebook will help streamline some functions, such as pre-scheduling Live events.

1\. Visit <https://www.facebook.com/live/producer> or create a new Facebook post and choose **Live Video**, as shown in the image below.&#x20;

2\. Scroll below the black preview screen and select **Use Stream Key,** and then check the box next to **Use a Persistent Stream Key**, as shown in the image below.

4\. Find the 'Live API' section and copy the **Server URL** and **Stream Key** from Facebook into your CWM settings. In CWM, navigate to the 'Stream Settings' page and look for the Facebook Live section and paste both the Server URL and Stream Key into the appropriate fields.  Please Save Changes.&#x20;

Now that you've set up your persistent key going live on Facebook is easy.


# Going Live on Facebook

If you have not configured your Facebook persistent key, please do that before going live.

#### Going Live steps:

1\. **Open** [**Facebook Live Producer**](https://www.facebook.com/live/producer) **page** and choose where to share your live stream along with the title and description.

2\. **Start your live stream** to CWM from your encoder.

3\. After a few moments, your live stream will begin to show on the Facebook Live Producer preview window. Press the **Go Live** button to start sharing.

You're now sharing your live stream on Facebook!


# Pre-scheduling to automate going Live.

From your Facebook page, create a **Live Video** post.

2\. Click on the "Connect" option.

3\. Ensure the **Enable persistent stream key** checkbox option is checked and copy and paste both the **Server URL** and **Persistent Stream Key** into your CWM **Stream Settings** page in the Facebook Persistent Key section.

4\. Click the **Schedule** button and enter your starting date and time.&#x20;

5\. Confirm your starting date and time, then click the **Schedule** submit button to save your changes.

**Facebook is not showing my live stream.**

Facebook requires you to schedule each of your live events ahead of time and also requires you to start the live stream at least 5 minutes before the scheduled time.

# YouTube Live

Start sharing your CWM live stream with your YouTube viewers using the steps below. This requires you to have a YouTube account that's in good standing and approved for live streaming.

1\. Log in to your YouTube account, click the Go Live button, and then click **Stream**.

2\. Click the Start button next to **Right now**, then click the Go button next to **Streaming software**.

3\. Find the Stream key section that displays your Server URL and Stream Key. Copy and paste the Server URL and Stream Key settings into the appropriate fields on your CWM account Stream Settings page. After saving all changes, your CWM live stream can be shared directly to your YouTube account during each live event.

To keep the same Stream Key for each event, click the "Default stream key" dropdown option and click "Create new stream key." Choose "Variable bitrate" for the Maximum sustained bitrate that you can support option if your bitrate changes from time to time.&#x20;

# Twitter & Periscope

How to share your stream to Twitter.

Using Twitter's **Media Studio Producer** option, you can copy the **RTMP URL,** and **Stream Key** provided by Twitter and paste them into the CWM Restream dashboard to share your live stream on Twitter.

1\. Log in to Twitter's **Media Studio Producer** website using your Twitter credentials by visiting [https://studio.twitter.com](https://studio.twitter.com/)

2\. Click on the Sources tab.

3\. Click the source you will use to view detailed RTMP information. If Twitter requires you to create a source, choose the "N. Virginia" option when asked for an origin stream location.

* **RTMP URL**
* **RTMP Stream Key**.

4\. Log in to your CWM account and click the "Restream" option from the main menu. Using the above information, copy and paste both the RTMP URL and RTMP Stream Key into the "Twitter" restream option.

# Instagram Live (with YellowDuck app)

Going Live on Instagram using the Yellow Duck app.

It is possible to live stream on Instagram using a third-party application called YellowDuck. YellowDuck will retrieve your RTMP stream key and URL, which you can then use to create a Custom RTMP option in your CWM Restream settings.&#x20;

Just follow a few simple steps.

1\. Start your Yellow Duck application.

2\. Log in to your Instagram.

3\. Get your stream key and RTMP URL for the Instagram account.

**Important:** *Keep in mind that as soon as your login passes, you have a few minutes window to start your stream since your key will expire in a few minutes.*

4\. Paste your stream key and RTMP link to your CWM account by visiting the Restream page and modifying the Custom RTMP option.

5\. Start your live stream, and it will be delivered to your Instagram. If you did not select the "auto-start" option when modifying the Custom RTMP options, you'd need to press the "Connect" button to begin sharing on Instagram once you are on-air.

# Instagram Live

How to get your Instagram Server URL and Stream Key.

You can livestream to Instagram by using the Custom RTMP option.

Here are the steps to get your Instagram Server URL and Stream Key:

1. Log in to Instagram on a desktop browser at instagram.com.
2. Go to "create" and select "live video."
3. Add a title and choose your audience, then click "next" to reveal your Stream Key and URL.
4. Copy the Server URL and Stream Key, and paste them into the Custom RTMP option of your CWM restream settings.


# Custom RTMP

The Custom RTMP option can send your live stream to any other RTMP live streaming provider.&#x20;

Simply copy a provided Server URL and Stream Key into the appropriate fields when configuring a Custom RTMP endpoint.


# Podcast Setup

With the Podcast feature, you can create your own iTunes Podcast with all the media in your Sermon archiving section. Your Podcast will update automatically whenever new videos are added to your account. Use this guide to learn how to submit your feed to iTunes and create your Podcast.

#### 1. Upload and categorize your videos:

Begin by uploading and categorizing your content on your CWM account's "Sermon Archiving" page. CWM will be the host of all your Podcast videos and artwork.

#### 2. Create your Podcast artwork:

You must now create your Podcast artwork, which is the artwork that is displayed to Podcast subscribers on iTunes when finding your Podcast channel. Artwork must be in the JPEG or PNG file formats and in the RGB color space with a minimum size of 1400 x 1400 pixels and a maximum size of 3000 x 3000 pixels at 72 DPI. See Top Podcasts in the Podcasts app or the iTunes Store for examples of artwork.

#### 3. Upload your Podcast artwork:

From your CWM Dashboard, visit the "Stream Settings" page and find the "Podcast hosting" section. Click on the 'Upload Artwork' link to upload your properly formatted image.

#### 4. Get your feed URL and test your Podcast:

From your CWM Dashboard, visit the "Stream Settings" page and find the "Podcast hosting" section. Copy your Podcast RSS feed URL that is displayed there. This will be needed in the following steps.\
\
Next, Open iTunes, choose File > Subscribe to Podcast, type your RSS feed URL in the text box, then click OK. If you can successfully download and play your sermon videos in iTunes, your podcast is working, and you can submit it to the iTunes Store.

#### 5. Validate your Podcast:

Create or login to an existing account from Apple's PodcastsConnect website by visiting: [https://podcastsconnect.apple.com](https://podcastsconnect.apple.com/). After logging in, follow the steps in the following Apple guide to validate your feed. This is an important step that Apple requires before your Podcast can be submitted to the iTunes store.

#### 6. Submit your Podcast:

After successfully validating your Podcast from the previous step, you can submit it to the iTunes store for review. Visit the following Apple guide to learn how to submit your Podcast:

#### 7. View your Podcast:

After you successfully submit your podcast to the iTunes Store and Apple approves the submission, you receive an email confirmation indicating your submission review is complete. Your confirmation email also includes the link to your active podcast.\

# Video-on-demand

To add, delete or modify videos, log in to your CWM account and navigate to the video archiving page. You can begin archiving by uploading content or using our cloud recording feature during your live stream. &#x20;

To upload your videos, log in to your account and click on "Sermon Archiving."  You'll find an upload section on the right-hand side. &#x20;

To use the live cloud recording feature during your next live stream, log in to your account and click the "Start Recording" button from the CWM Broadcast Panel.   This will record your live stream from the point of pressing "Start Recording," and it will be saved to your account.


# Embed codes

We provide an embed code for each video. This is useful when needing to display a particular video.

You can find an embed code by visiting the video archiving page and clicking on the video you wish to embed. After clicking on the individual video, locate the embed code on the next page and copy + paste it into the HTML code of your website.


# Mobile apps

We provide individual URLs that will point directly to your media content. This is helpful when developing mobile applications, tv applications, or any other type of customized application.&#x20;

You can find all available direct URLs by visiting the video archiving page and clicking on the video you wish to use.


# RSS Feed

Upon request, we can generate an auto-updating RSS feed URL that will display your hosted content. This helps develop playlists or customized video layouts in which using individual URLs can be unmanageable. This usage example will require advanced knowledge of javascript or another coding language.&#x20;


# Video Scheduling

Schedule your uploaded or recorded videos to be automatically played and rebroadcasted at specific times during the week.  You can schedule videos to playback recurringly on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis and broadcast them to all your outlets, including your Roku channel and social media.

# How to schedule a video

To get started, log in to your CWM Dashboard and visit the **Live Service Guide** page. Click '**Add a New Event**' and choose '**Video on demand broadcast**' from the drop-down box and select your video from your archives listing along with entering a date, time title, and descriptions of the aired program.


# Scheduling limits

#### Daily schedule limitation

You may have up to **5** scheduled video events per day. Please get in touch with us if you need more than five events per day.


# Streaming to Facebook Live

Both Live and Video broadcasted events can air automatically on Facebook Live when you schedule the event ahead of time within Facebook and configure a 'Persistent Key.'

# Statistics and reports

Learn how to review viewer data.

Viewer numbers and other statistics are provided for Live and On-demand content. We also provide real-time data during a live event.

Navigate the available guides here to learn how to find and read the statistical information.


# Live stream stats

To review real-time or historical data for your live events, log in to your account and visit the **Broadcast Panel**. You'll find various options for displaying your data, such as day intervals or seeing specific events days. Live streaming stats are broken down into the following:

## Concurrent viewers

Concurrent viewers are the most amount of viewers watching your live stream at a single time. This includes all viewers, regardless of how they watched your live stream.

## Unique connections

While concurrent viewers will show the most people watching at a single time during your live stream, Unique connections break down even further by grouping households together by IP.

For example, in a single household, two or more people may watch on their own devices, and unique connections will group all those viewers as one since they all watched from the same IP address.

## Mobile connections

These are viewers watching from mobile devices such as a tablet, iPhone, Android phone, or any other machine that identifies itself as a mobile device in its user-agent.&#x20;

## Roku connections

These are viewers watching from a Roku device.


# Video views

Videos are provided with a much more general statistic: the total number of all-time views. Visit your video archiving page and find your catalog of videos. Beneath each video, you'll find the views count.&#x20;


# Subscribers

Subscribers to your channel will receive notifications when your scheduled event is live. They will also receive alerts when new videos are available to watch.&#x20;

**Important:** Your live event must be scheduled using the Live Service Guide to notify subscribers of the event.&#x20;

**To ensure your subscribers get notifications when you go live:**

1. Schedule your live stream by adding your event to the **Live Service Guide.**
2. It will also be a good idea to update your event descriptions weekly to give your subscribers the latest about your ministry and upcoming services.&#x20;

**To ensure your subscribers get notifications on new video content:**

1. Update your video titles and descriptions. Videos without valuable titles and descriptions will likely not be used when alerting subscribers of new content.

**Subscriber Count**\
Your subscriber count can be found by logging into your account and visiting the Broadcast Panel.


# Live stream disconnects

Server disconnects can be troublesome and hard to diagnose but we've gathered some of the most common causes here for you to review and fix:

## Check your upload speed

Ensure that your internet upload speed is sufficient for the bitrate you are broadcasting. To do this, visit <http://testmy.net/upload> and run at least three tests, then average them together. Make sure the average speed is greater than the bitrate you are broadcasting. If not, you'll need to bring your encoding bitrate down.\
\
Be aware that other activities on your network can also consume your upload speed. If you're having trouble with continuous disconnects, it is recommended that you power cycle your internet router or modem by unplugging it and then plugging it back in, to reboot it and give it a fresh start prior to live streaming. This can also help ensure that network activity consuming your upload speed is halted (though it may resume depending on the nature of the such activity.)\
\
It is always best to make sure not to stream more than HALF of your available bandwidth. For example, if you have a 4mbps upload speed, try not to stream any higher than 2mbps.

## Check your encoder CPU usage

The higher the bitrate of your stream, the more CPU usage will be needed. Ensure that your encoding system is not being overtasked. If you are both streaming and recording the broadcast at the same time, the load on your encoding system could result in encoder disconnects and/or random distortions or dropouts in the recorded video.

#### Check your CPU while streaming live:

In Windows, open the "Task Manager." Click on the "Performance" tab to monitor the CPU.\
\
On Mac, open the "Activity Monitor" and click the CPU tab.\
\
If your CPU usage is above 75%, then it's an indication that the computer may be underpowered for the bitrate you're streaming at. If you see the CPU hitting 100%, then this is most certainly the cause of server disconnects. You should lower your bitrate until the CPU is not using more than 75% to allow headroom for other programs that are also running. It's also a good idea not to have any other programs running if you're close to CPU max usage.\
\
If you are multi-bit streaming and having CPU usage problems, disable your secondary multi-bit streams to help relieve CPU usage.

## Is your encoder wireless or wired? (Wired is better)

It's best that your encoder is connected via physical ethernet cable to your network, not via WiFi. There are so many radio signals that can degrade WiFi throughput that even though your ISP provides good upload speeds, your WiFi connection might not consistently provide those speeds from your encoder to the internet modem/router.

## Are you allowing public use of WiFi connection to your network?

It's also far better not to use your network publicly via WiFi while you are encoding. For example, sometimes churches allow a congregation to connect to their network via a guest WiFi access point. This is not a good idea, as you cannot guarantee that users won't interfere with the bandwidth available for streaming. Additionally, you would be surprised at how many computers have hidden malware their users aren't aware of, that will launch attacks through your network and cause your network IP to be blacklisted.\
\
Allowing guest WiFi use of your primary internet connection is a bad idea all the way around. If you must, consider installing a secondary internet service to avoid disrupting streaming and other important connectivity the church may need for day-to-day operations.

#### Make sure you enable auto-adjust and set it to degrade the quality

In the event that any of the issues listed here affect your ability to push data to the streaming server, you want your encoder to be able to auto-adjust to keep the stream going. It's best to degrade quality rather than drop frames.&#x20;

## More advanced troubleshooting

If the above steps are not helping, here are some more advanced diagnoses to determine a cause.

#### Check for packet loss along the route.

Checking for packet loss can help determine problems relating to your modem or router and even ISP networking. If you are using a Windows system to encode, or have a Windows computer on the same network as the encoder, there is a handy pathping command you can use to check the routing between your location and us thoroughly. To use this command, open a command prompt, (Run -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt), and run this command:\
\
pathping\
\
Replace with the actual domain name which points to your streaming.\
\
This command will run for several minutes, and will eventually produce a summary that looks something like this:\
\
Copy the complete output and paste it into a support ticket and we'll see if it indicates packet loss. If so, you'll generally need to contact your ISP and provide them with the evidence of packet loss so they can work with the affected network hop to clear it up.\
\
Packet loss can be intermittent, so please run at least three pathping commands and provide complete output from each to us.\
\
If you are on a Mac, the pathping command is not available, unless you can run Windows via Bootcamp, Parallels or VMWare Fusion. If you cannot access the pathping command, run these two commands instead:\
\
traceroute\
\
ping -n 100\
\
The output is not as detailed, but still may help reveal packet loss.

#### Modem and Router logs

Most times you will never realize that your internet is have disconnection problems until your are live streaming. Disconnections during normal web browsing can appear as short delays in loading web pages. Having a 1 second disconnect of your internet is all that is needed to disconnect you from our servers.\
\
Having a look at your router and modem logs can sometimes reveal problems such as this at the ISP level. Looking for things related to multiple DHCP renewals or time syncing problems can indicate random disconnects of your internet. If you suspect the modem or router to be the problem contact your ISP to upgrade or replace it for you.
